Japanese Geta Slippers

$45

This vintage pair of geta slippers showcases traditional Japanese craftsmanship, featuring a flat wooden base elevated by “teeth” and a fabric thong (hanao) that secures the foot. Designed to keep feet and kimono hems above dirt, water, or snow, geta were practical for everyday wear and festivals alike, while their timeless design makes them a unique statement piece for modern styling. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), rapid modernization and population pressures in Japan prompted many to emigrate. Beginning in the 1880s and 1890s, Japanese immigrants settled in Washington State, particularly in Seattle and Tacoma, finding work in fishing, agriculture, lumber, and railroads. They brought with them rich cultural traditions, from gardens and crafts to festivals, leaving a lasting mark on the region. These slippers are a small but tangible reflection of that heritage and the enduring influence of Japanese culture in the Pacific Northwest.
